What is degenerative disc disease? Degenerative disc disease happens when one or more discs between the vertebrae (bones in your spine) wear down. Discs act like a cushion between your vertebrae and help to stabilize your spine. Degenerative disc disease commonly occurs in the neck or lower back as you get older.

Degenerated discs in the lumbar spine can cause lower back pain. If the disc is not irritating an adjacent spinal nerve, the pain is primarily localized to the center of the lower back.

Degenerative (worn out) discs Degenerated discs are a common back problem. The spinal discs, which are soft, gelatinous cushions that separate the vertebrae, wear down during the aging process. Because the discs function as between-the-bones shock absorbers, allowing the spine to bend and twist, this deterioration can result in serious back pain.

Degenerative disc disease commonly occurs in the neck or lower back as you get older. When nerves are irritated in the low back from degenerative disc disease, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy, and it often causes the commonly recognized "sciatica" pain that shoots down a lower extremity. This condition can be preceded by a localized low-back aching.

The pain may: • Range from mild to severe and disabling. • Primarily affect the neck and lower back. • Extend to the arms and hands.
